Liverpool defeated Bournemouth on Wednesday by a score of 2-1 to advance to the League Cup fourth round. As a result, they are now considered the favourites to win the championship, despite playing poorly and not being able to perform to their full potential at the Vitality Stadium.
German manager Jurgen Klopp chose to start with a few of his first-choice players, but he also included top player Mohamed Salah—who even donned the captain’s armband—and Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, one of the season’s most impressive performers. Although Caohim Kelleher, the Irish custodian, was not involved since he had little chance against Alisson of Brazil in the Premier League.
After a long-range drive by Harvey Elliot, Dutch forward Cody Gakpo scored the game’s opening goal in the 31st minute of the first half by simply pushing the ball home off the keeper’s rebound. Late in the second half, Justin Kluivert, a fellow Dutchman, beat the Reds’ defence to the ball to give the home team an equaliser.

Darwin Nunez, a Uruguayan substitute, scored the game-winning goal for Liverpool in the closing moments of the game. With a strong assist from Trent Alexander Arnold, Nunez boldly entered the box and fired a right-footed shot past the home team’s goalkeeper. With this victory, Liverpool takes the lead in the league cup, with Chelsea and the other five members of the big six already out of the running.
