*JUST NOW: Mariners vs Phillies Game Postponed Due To Severe Weather*
Seattle, WA — The scheduled matchup between the Seattle Mariners and Philadelphia Phillies at T-Mobile Park has been postponed, MLB officials announced just hours before first pitch Sunday evening.
The game, originally set for 7:10 PM PT, will not be played due to severe weather and unsafe field conditions.
“After consultation with both clubs and local meteorologists, we made the decision to postpone tonight’s game for the safety of our players, staff, and fans,” MLB said in a statement. “Heavy rain, sustained winds, and lightning in the area made it impossible to play.”
### What happened
A powerful storm system moved into the Puget Sound region late Sunday afternoon, bringing downpours and gusts up to 45 mph. By 5:30 PM, rain was already pooling on the warning track and the tarp was on the field.
Despite T-Mobile Park having a retractable roof, league officials said wind and travel concerns for both teams, plus forecasted lightning through the night, factored into the call. The Phillies team bus was also delayed getting to the ballpark due to flooded streets around downtown Seattle.
### Makeup date
MLB announced the game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on *Monday, August 25*.
Game 1: 1:10 PM PT
Game 2: Approximately 40 minutes after Game 1 concludes
Tickets for Sunday will be honored for either game of the doubleheader, or fans can exchange them at the Mariners box office.
### Impact on the standings
Both teams were looking to gain ground in their respective playoff races. The Mariners sit in the AL Wild Card hunt, while the Phillies are battling in the NL East. The postponement means both bullpens get an extra day of rest, but also creates a tough 7-game stretch for Seattle.
Fans were already inside the gates when the announcement came. The team said concessions will remain open for one hour for those with tickets.
