While the Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough was initially moved to a Thursday night slot to accommodate a Sky Sports broadcast, severe surface waterlogging and poor localized conditions forced officials to call off the fixture following a pre-match pitch inspection.
When heavy rainfall saturates the playing surface, the match referee conducts a formal inspection alongside club officials. If the ball fails to roll naturally or standing water poses a safety hazard to players, the match must be postponed under EFL regulations.
