49ers vs Jaguars: Feliciano will start as a bigger O-line role looms.
When he signed an offseason contract with the 49ers, veteran offensive tackle Jon Feliciano was aware that he might find himself back in a reserve position.
He also understood that, in the worst case scenario, he would be given the opportunity to play as the starting backup at both guard and centre.
Just before the 49ers left for their Week 10 game at the Jacksonville Jaguars, Feliciano said to NBC Sports Bay Area on Friday, “I came here with the hope of winning a Super Bowl with this team.”
On Sunday in Jacksonville, Feliciano will make his 49ers debut as left guard Aaron Banks is anticipated to miss several games due to a hyperextended toe.
For the Raiders throughout his first four NFL seasons, Feliciano mostly served as a backup. The following four seasons, he started 46 games with the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills.
When Feliciano joined with the 49ers, he acknowledged that there was a possibility he might be a backup.
Ultimately, the 49ers had right guard Spencer Burford, centre Jake Brendel, and banks back as starters.
Feliciano did, however, express confidence in his ability to land a job. And it may still be the direction this season goes.
Coach Kyle Shanahan stated on Friday that Feliciano, 31, has sufficiently pleased the coaching staff to be given a chance to rotate into the offensive line.
Because of his steady play, Shanahan stated, “we were going to start playing him a little bit just to get him in there.” “We’ve been really happy with Jon, but then this with Banks, so now he’s got his opportunity.”
Feliciano thinks Shanahan’s offensive scheme works well for him. He claimed that in previous seasons, there were occasions when he would catch the 49ers’ strategy while watching film to get ready for an impending defence.
His gaze would go to the opposite side of the sphere.
Feliciano remarked, “I was a fan of this team and Kyle’s offence after watching film of their offence and the run game.” “I believe that many offensive linemen see this scheme and find it appealing.” I was therefore ecstatic when the 49ers called. I believed that I could perform well in this offence.
With three straight losses coming up in Jacksonville, the 49ers are banking on him. San Francisco will prioritise improving their run production.
While Feliciano is expected to start at left guard, it remains unclear if Trent Williams or Jaylon Moore will be the left tackle.Williams’s ankle ailment makes him dubious.
Feliciano stated, “I’ve had a lot of reps with both of them.” Trent eases the life of a guard considerably. Jay-Mo, we’re getting repetitions together in practise virtually every day. Playing all three positions has the advantage of allowing me to become familiar with everyone.
