Why so many teams decided against signing Dominik Szoboszlai of Liverpool this summer
Dominik Szoboszlai was a target for a lot of teams in the summer, but most were turned off by the high upfront costs associated with acquiring the midfield player before Liverpool chose to activate his release clause.
That’s according to a story from The Athletic, which says the Reds decided they weren’t ready to match Manchester United’s offer for Mason Mount, instead they focused on the Hungarian.
Dominik Szoboszlai has shown himself to be a valuable addition this summer. When his transfer to Anfield was revealed, there didn’t seem to be much of a fanfare. But Szoboszlai is the talk of the town right now.
One day before Szoboszlai’s release clause expired, Liverpool reportedly agreed to pay £60.1 million for him, according to The Athletic. On Merseyside, the midfield player makes about £120,000 a week. Mason Mount, on the other hand, could make over £250,000 every week if he played for Manchester United.
Given his fantastic start to the season, Liverpool supporters must be asking why Szoboszlai was still available at that price.
Szoboszlai was reportedly desired by several teams, according to The Athletic. But the fact that it was so expensive up front for the child turned off a lot of people.
Blessing in disguise
It is amazing to consider that Alexis Mac Allister and Mount were Liverpool’s top midfield targets this summer. Mount’s relocation feels like a blessing in disguise as a result.
He hasn’t exactly gotten off to a fast start at Old Trafford. On the other hand, Szoboszlai could not have started his career at Liverpool any better.
He seems to have the makings of a big star. Steve Nicol told ESPN that Szoboszlai is appearing “scary.” Considering his age, there’s no reason he can’t be a mainstay of the Liverpool team for the ensuing ten years.
Considering the direction that transfer fees are headed, it is reasonable to argue that investing £60 million will be remembered as a brilliant move.
