Florida State football had the opportunity to play a sizeable amount of its 2024 commitments last season. This was partly because the Seminoles limped to a 2-10 record and the coaching staff had to see what it had on the roster for 2025.
However, some of the results were encouraging with pieces such as Kam Davis, Lawayne McCoy, BJ Gibson, Landen Thomas, and Amaree Williams. The tight end position has always been a group that head football coach Mike Norvell emphasizes in his offenses.
Landen Thomas and Amaree Williams both showed flashes of being successful as true freshmen, where they combined for 19 receptions for 244 yards and three touchdowns last year.
This was something that the coaching staff could build on. However, Norvell handed the keys to the offense to former UCF head football coach Gus Malzahn, and then the Seminoles brought in former UCF tight end transfer Randy Pittman Jr.
After the season, Norvell alluded to the fact that Amaree Williams could play some defensive end in the spring and fall practices. When arriving at Florida State as a recruit, he reclassified from the 2025 cycle to the 2024 cycle. As a result, his frame had to catch up to the collegiate game.
The Seminoles were recruiting him as a defensive end originally but then decided that they wanted him to see the field due to his skill set. Since the defensive end position had pieces like Patrick Payton, Marvin Jones Jr., and Sione Lolohea (who did not know that the defensive line would be underwhelming), they put Williams in the tight end position.
This was a smart move to put the Florida native there. However, they have a decision to make this offseason as to where to insert Williams. Personally, there is no sense in keeping him full-time at the tight end position since they have Randy Pittman Jr., Landen Thomas, and four-star signee Chase Loftin.
