Jason Verrett is a former 49ers cornerback.
There has been a lot of roster overlap between the San Francisco 49ers and the Houston Texans, but one of their exits is now free to sign elsewhere. Unfortunately, Jason Verrett’s time as a cornerback in Houston was short-lived and had minimal effect.
The Texans declared on 15 November that Verrett would be released from the practise squad. There was no matching addition to the move.
According to the Texans website, “Jason Verrett has been released by the Houston Texans from the practise squad.”
On October 11, Houston signed the former 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers cornerback. But in his month and a change with the Texans, the team never used him in a game, keeping him on the practise squad.
Verrett spent the last four seasons with the 49ers, and he is now looking for a new team. Despite his career being hampered by injuries, he was still a fantastic player for San Francisco when he was able to play.
However, Verrett is running out of time at age 32. His next chance won’t likely be a return to the 49ers, as San Francisco’s secondary has bounced back with the 34-3 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jason Verrett’s Path in the NFL
The San Diego Chargers have high expectations for Verrett when they selected him first overall in the 2014 NFL Draught. However, the previously noted injury problems started early, and he only appeared in six games as a rookie.
However, despite his short start, his stats are still remarkable, according to Pro Football Reference. In six games, four interceptions and four passes defensed is a strong return. That turned into three interceptions and twelve passes swatted in 14 games the following season.
But three serious injuries would limit Verrett’s playing time to only six games over the following four years. During his prime seasons, he was sidelined by an ACL rupture, a torn Achilles, and an ankle issue in his first 49ers season.
The 49ers did not give up, though. 2020 saw his return, and it was beneficial. Verrett made two interceptions and seven passes defensed in 13 games. But in 2022, after having missed the first few games due to injury, he tore his Achilles once more. That was the last he would be spending in San Francisco.
49ers Training QB
In relation to roster changes, the 49ers may soon make one of their own. On November 14, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler was the first to report that San Francisco had worked out former QB Chris Streveler of the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets.
Fowler said on X, “Free agent quarterback Chris Streveler is working out for the #49ers today, per source.”
The 49ers’ desire to sign a quarterback may come as a surprise given that they already have Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold, but Sean Deveney of Heavy notes that head coach Kyle Shanahan probably needs Streveler or another quarterback for scouting and practise.
Throughout his career, Streveler has made nine trips to the NFL, but he has only made one start, for the Jets last season. He has completed 27 of 40 passes for 231 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in all of his outings.
