Prior to the 49ers’ 34-3 annihilation of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at TIAA Bank Field, Javon Hargrave talked candidly about their mindset.
The resounding victory reminded me of San Francisco’s undefeated first five weeks of the season. Did the 49ers lose three straight games before to the bye merely because they let their guard down?
In an interview with KNBR’s “Murph & Mac” on Tuesday, Hargrave stated, “Yeah, it’s hard not to.” Everyone must take something away from it. Just be careful not to read or watch too much. People say that when everyone is complimenting you on how wonderful you are, it’s like a little poison. And while everyone is criticising you, you are unable to read or hear them.
“Just keeping them blinkers on, staying focused and just trying to grow every week.”
In the last seconds of San Francisco’s first loss of the season, a 19-17 road setback to the Cleveland Browns, Jake Moody missed a 41-yard ( goal attempt. During the next two games, which ended in losses to the Cincinnati Bengals at home and the Minnesota Vikings on the road, quarterback Brock Purdy threw four interceptions.
However, the 49ers played as near to a flawless game as they could on Sunday.
We were a touch impatient, according to Hargrave. “We sensed it. For us, the bye was probably an excellent time to unwind and clear our heads. Everyone felt that with everyone when we returned to the building.
“The time was right. That seems to have been the case from the game’s opening snap until its closing snap. All that was needed was hunger. That seems to be the way of thinking moving forward.”
