Collingwood Secures Jason Johannisen in Strategic Move to Strengthen Backline for Next Two AFL Seasons
The Collingwood Football Club has confirmed the signing of veteran defender Jason Johannisen on a two-year deal, in a move set to bolster their defensive stocks and add valuable experience to their lineup.
Johannisen, 31, joins the Magpies after a decorated 12-year career with the Western Bulldogs, where he played 173 games and was an integral part of their drought-breaking 2016 premiership win. Known for his explosive pace, clean ball use, and ability to break lines off half-back, Johannisen brings a wealth of AFL experience to a Collingwood side looking to sustain its recent resurgence.
The two-year contract will see Johannisen play through the 2026 season, offering both on-field leadership and a cool head under pressure — traits that will complement Collingwood’s emerging young defenders.
Collingwood GM of Football, Graham Wright, said the club was excited to bring in a player of Johannisen’s calibre Jason is a proven performer at the highest level,” Wright said. “He’s a premiership player, a leader, and someone who has consistently impacted games with his run and skill. His experience will be invaluable as we continue to develop our list and push for sustained success.”
Johannisen’s arrival adds further depth to a backline that already features names like Darcy Moore, Brayden Maynard, and Isaac Quaynor. His versatility — having spent time on the wing and even forward in recent years — gives coach Craig McRae tactical flexibility heading into the new season.
For Johannisen, the move represents both a fresh challenge and a chance to chase more success in the twilight of his career“I’m incredibly grateful for my time at the Bulldogs and proud of what we achieved,” Johannisen said. “But I’m also really excited about this next chapter. Collingwood is a massive club with a great culture and a strong list — I can’t wait to get started.”
The signing comes as part of Collingwood’s broader list management strategy, which has focused on bringing in experienced players to mentor the club’s younger core while maintaining its status as a premiership contender.
Johannisen is expected to begin preseason training with the Magpies in November.
