UNC Lands Gonzaga Big Man Recruit, Nyk Lewis — 7-Foot, No. 55 Overall Prospect Commits to Tar Heels Men’s Basketball Over Power-5 Heavyweight Programs
The North Carolina Tar Heels have added a major piece to their future frontcourt, securing a commitment from 7-foot center Nyk Lewis, a highly touted prospect who was previously committed to Gonzaga. Ranked No. 55 overall in the 2025 recruiting class by 247Sports Composite, Lewis chose UNC over offers from several Power Five heavyweights, including Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona, and Texas.
The commitment marks a significant win for head coach Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels, who continue to re-establish their national recruiting presence under his leadership. Lewis brings size, versatility, and a polished interior game that could make him an impact player early in his college career.
Originally committed to Gonzaga, Lewis reopened his recruitment earlier this summer, citing a desire to explore programs closer to the East Coast and systems that align more with his style of play. UNC quickly emerged as a top contender after hosting Lewis on an official visit in late July. Sources close to the recruitment indicated that the Tar Heels’ tradition of developing elite big men and their uptempo offensive system played a pivotal role in his decision.
“UNC just felt like home,” Lewis said in a statement announcing his commitment. “The coaching staff showed me how I could fit into their program and develop into the player I want to be. The fans, the campus — everything just clicked.”
Standing at 7 feet tall with a 7’3” wingspan, Lewis is more than just a rim protector. He’s mobile, can run the floor, and possesses a soft touch around the basket. Scouts have also praised his improving mid-range shot and passing ability from the high post, making him an ideal fit for UNC’s high-low offense. Defensively, he’s a natural shot-blocker and shows strong instincts in help-side rotations.
For North Carolina, Lewis fills a critical need as the program prepares for potential early NBA departures from its current frontcourt. His commitment gives the Tar Heels a high-upside center to build around in the coming years and may signal the beginning of a strong recruiting run for the 2025 class.
This pickup also highlights the program’s ability to go head-to-head with other national powers and win key recruiting battles. Lewis had in-home visits scheduled with Kentucky and Kansas before deciding to shut down his recruitment in favor of UNC — a move that surprised many insiders.
“He’s the kind of player that can anchor a defense and be a game-changer on both ends,” one ACC assistant coach said. “If he continues to develop, he has pro potential.”
Lewis is expected to sign his National Letter of Intent during the early signing period in November. Until then, Tar Heel fans can celebrate the addition of one of the top big men in the 2025 class — a player with the tools to make a major impact in Chapel Hill.
With Lewis now on board, all eyes will be on who joins him next in a class that is shaping up to be one of the strongest in recent UNC his
