Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has indicated that quarterback Justin Fields is a strong candidate for the team’s starting quarterback position in the 2025 season. Fields, who joined the Steelers in March 2024 via a trade with the Chicago Bears, began the 2024 season as the starter due to Russell Wilson’s calf injury. During his six starts, Fields led the team to a 4-2 record, completing 106 of 161 passes for 1,106 yards, with five touchdowns and one interception. He also contributed significantly on the ground, rushing for 289 yards and five touchdowns on 62 carries.
Despite Fields’ commendable performance, Wilson reclaimed the starting role upon his recovery, guiding the Steelers to a 6-1 record in his starts. However, both quarterbacks are set to become free agents this offseason, leaving the Steelers with crucial decisions to make regarding their quarterback situation.
In a recent press conference, Tomlin praised Fields’ professionalism and development throughout the season, stating, “I think the way that he managed his professional circumstance was really impressive… I thought the way that he conducted himself makes that a legitimate thought or idea at this juncture.”
The Steelers’ early playoff exit after a loss to the Baltimore Ravens has prompted discussions about potential roster changes. Tomlin acknowledged the need for adjustments, mentioning that the team is evaluating decisions related to personnel and strategy. With both Wilson and Fields out of contract, the quarterback position remains a focal point for the team’s offseason plans.
