- Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Omar Khan is actively addressing several challenges facing the team, particularly concerning player contract statuses and roster composition. Following the Steelers’ 28-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round, marking their sixth consecutive postseason defeat, both Khan and Head Coach Mike Tomlin have acknowledged the necessity for significant changes.
One of the primary concerns is the quarterback position. With both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields out of contract, the Steelers face critical decisions. Khan has expressed confidence in Kenny Pickett, stating, “I have full faith in Kenny Pickett.” Pickett, who has shown promise in his tenure, is expected to be a central figure in the team’s offensive strategy moving forward.
In addition to the quarterback situation, the wide receiver corps is under scrutiny. When questioned about potential trades to bolster this group, Khan indicated that there are currently no active discussions. He emphasized the team’s focus on evaluating the existing 90-man roster during training camp, stating, “There’s nothing going on right now… our focus is on these 90 guys right now.”
The offensive line is another area undergoing evaluation. Following the release of center Mason Cole, Khan highlighted the importance of positional flexibility among linemen. He mentioned Nate Herbig as a current option at center but also noted the team’s intent to explore free agency, trades, and the draft to strengthen this position.
Despite the challenges, the Steelers’ leadership remains optimistic. Khan, who has been with the organization for over two decades and was promoted to General Manager in 2022, is committed to building another championship-caliber team. He stated, “I am ready for this challenge and grateful to continue the success we have had on the field during my first 21 years.”
As the offseason progresses, Khan and Tomlin are engaging in comprehensive discussions with team owner Art Rooney II to analyze past decisions and strategize for the future. Tomlin remarked, “Really just beginning the processes of some of the decision-making that has to transpire… Those are just the very beginning of multiple conversations in terms of how we wrap a bow around some of the lessons learned, analyze some of the decisions made, personnel, strategy … .”
The Steelers’ approach to these challenges will significantly impact their performance in the upcoming season. With a focus on addressing key contract situations, evaluating roster needs, and making strategic acquisitions, the organization aims to overcome recent setbacks and reestablish itself as a formidable contender in the league.
