Breaking news: Men’s Hockey Uses Retro Alternate Jerseys to Honour the Past.
Following the Athletic Association’s vote in the spring to make ice hockey and skiing varsity sports, Penn State played its first-ever varsity match versus Carnegie Tech on December 6, 1940. Penn State finished the 1940–41 season with a 6-3-1 record after winning that first game 3–1. Following the inaugural season, hockey was given full status and full funding by the university’s Athletic Advisory Board. However, as part of a wartime economic strategy, the Athletic Association would stop hockey along with cross country, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, and golf three seasons later, as the consequences of World War II were felt throughout the campus.
After the war, hockey made a comeback to Happy Valley for one last season in 1946. The team played seven games, four of which were finally cancelled because of the warm weather. Due to a lack of facilities, the Athletic Association once again discontinued hockey before the start of the following season. It would be almost twenty-five years until hockey returned to University Park, this time as a club sport in 1971 after over 3,000 community people signed a petition calling for the sport to return to campus.
