Proposed Steelers trade lands former Super Bowl MVP in Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Steelers sitting at 5-2 after seven games, and their season recently got a big jolt when the team decided to turn to Russell Wilson once he was fully healthy. Wilson quickly showed that he has the potential to take the Steelers’ passing attack to a new level.
But the Steelers won’t be able to reach their ceiling if they don’t give Wilson more weapons to work with. Right now, he’s got a strong No. 1 option in George Pickens, but there are nothing but question marks behind him.
General manager Omar Khan is working the phones trying to get his team an upgrade, and one potential option is Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp.
The Draft Network’s Jane Bachus recently suggested the Steelers as a possible landing spot for Kupp.
The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be the frontrunners for Kupp’s services. With a solid foundation in receiver George Pickens, adding Kupp could provide a significant boost to their offensive capabilities. Kupp’s ability to operate in both short and deep routes would complement Pickens well, making the Steelers an even more formidable contender in the AFC.
While reports have suggested that the former Super Bowl MVP is available ahead of the trade deadline, Rams head coach Sean McVay poured cold water on that after the team’s Week 8 win over the Minnesota Vikings.
“That’s not a move that we want to make,” McVay said, doubling down on his stance that Kupp won’t be traded. “He’s a Ram and we expect it to stay that way.”
It remains to be seen if that’s just a smokescreen from the Rams head coach, or if he’s truly serious, but we wouldn’t expect him to come out and publicly say the Rams are looking to trade Kupp, anyway.
All that said, there’s no doubt Kupp would be a huge upgrade for the Steelers, as he’d be the most proven receiver on the team upon his arrival and would offer a fantastic No. 2 option for Wilson.
The price would have to be right for the 31-year-old receiver, who does have some injury concerns and an expensive contract. But Pittsburgh should absolutely pounce all over him if he’s made available ahead of Nov. 5.
