The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing running back Jonathan Ward to their active roster, sources tell PennLive. It was first reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC2-TV in Houston. Ward was on the team‘s practice squad and had used all three of his elevations from the practice squad. With running back Cordarrelle Patterson out and Ward becoming a vital member of the group’s special teams, Ward now earns himself an active roster spot.
It is unclear what the corresponding move is to get Ward on the 53-man roster. Ward was signed by the Steelers after a rookie minicamp tryout and impressed during training camp before suffering a hamstring injury.
Ward has spent time with multiple teams since coming out of Central Michigan, including the Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans. The 27-year-old Ward has had just 91 rushing yards in his career.
In three games this season, Ward has five rushes for 22 yards while playing a significant role on all of the team’s coverage units on special teams.
