On a day that saw a major move in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs trading for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, the Miami Dolphins made a few minor ones. The Dolphins signed quarterback C.J. Beathard to their practice squad on Wednesday, as the team announced.
Beathard was with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2021-2023. More importantly, he was drafted and played for the San Francisco 49’ers from 2017-2020. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was on the Niners staff during Beathard’s stint in San Francisco, so the offense and system knowledge as well as familiarity are all there.
Beathard has a 3-10 record as a starter, 3,886 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his six year professional career. He won his last start, which was a 26-0 Jaguars victory last season against the Carolina Panthers Week 17. Beathard went 17 of 24 passing for 178 yards along with three rushes for 24 yards.
While the Dolphins expect starter Tua Tagovailoa back this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, the overall depth of the room is hurting. Tyler “Snoop” Huntley suffered a shoulder injury on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts and Skylar Thompson is also not yet fully healed from a rib injury.
The Dolphins also signed wide receiver Tarik Black to the practice squad. Miami had to release rookie tight end Hayden Rucci from the scout team to make roster room.
Black was undrafted in 2021 and saw one game of action with the New York Jets, recording one reception for ten yards. He has spent the last few seasons on a few practice squads including the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 and most recently the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024.
