PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers seem likely to welcome back starting left guard Isaac Seumalo, who is recovering from a pectoral injury that forced him to miss the first four games of the season. Seumalo declined interview requests with the media, but took part in practice on Wednesday after logging three limited practices last week.
Seumalo slots in on his natural side. That means that, with starting right guard James Daniels out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, the Steelers will have a new right guard, who is expected to be promising rookie Mason McCormick.
McCormick received two thumbs up from head coach Mike Tomlin for his performance against the Indianapolis Colts in his first career start, but that was at left guard, not right guard. He says there is little difference between the two, and he is prepared to play both.
“There’s not a big difference. A lot of stuff is just flipped and you do a lot of the same things on both sides. It’s just getting comfortable with it, and it’ll be a smooth move over there, and I’m ready for it,” McCormick said.
Seumalo has coached up McCormick and the rest of the offensive line with his ‘intentionality throughout practice’, McCormick says. So, having him back on the field will be a boost.
As for McCormick, he allowed just two pressures at the start of his first season, according to Pro Football Focus. The Steelers have yet to have the same starting five on the offensive line this year, and it does not appear they will have that continuity in Week 5, either.
