PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers could soon welcome back starting left guard Isaac Seumalo after a three-week absence. For the first time since his injury, head coach Mike Tomlin swung the door wide open on his availability, meaning that Pittsburgh could get a key starter back along their offensive line.
“Isaac is working his way back into the offensive line. We’ll see what his participation looks like this week and let the quality and the amount of that participation be our guide in terms of his participation,” Tolmin said on Tuesday.
Seumalo missed the first three games due to a strained pectoral muscle. He just started to work off to the side last week, and it sounds like this week could be the first week that Seumalo comes back and works in teams drills for the first time since the injury.
If Seumalo can still not go, guards Mason McCormick and Spencer Anderson will rotate at left guard once again, just as they did this week against the Los Angeles Chargers. Pittsburgh could use the return of Seumalo to help a run game that has racked up stats through volume but not efficiency.
The Steelers rank 30th in rushing success rate, and while they hammered the Chargers late in their 20-10 win, Tomlin wants the offense to be more fluid early in games and avoid negativity. That could be a key step.
