The Pittsburgh Steelers have released cornerback Zyon Gilbert and wide receiver Shaquan Davis and signed cornerbacks D’Shawn Jamison and James Pierre to their practice squad before the team’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
Pittsburgh signed Pierre to help on special teams after losing starting gunner Ben Skowronek to a shoulder injury. In addition, special teams ace Tyler Matakevich was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury and will miss at least the next four games.
Gilbert had been with the team since training camp when they signed him amid a flurry of injuries. He was one of three cornerbacks on the practice squad, which has now increased to four cornerbacks. The former Packers cornerback earned a spot on the practice squad after the Steelers cut him following cut-down day.
Meanwhile, Davis was brought in last wee to help simulate the size that the Denver Broncos had at wide receiver. The team is re-signing Jaray Jenkins, who will likely replace Davis’ spot on the practice squad. Pittsburgh has three other wide receivers on the practice squad in Skowronek, Brandon Johnson, and Quez Watkins.
