BRAKING NEWS: Trevor Lawrence Agree to Contract Extension with Jaguars
Reporting the news about the extension, stating, “The Jaguars have reached a deal with their star QB Trevor Lawrence. Sources says they are giving the former No. 1 pick a five-year extension worth $275M — $55M a year — with $200M guaranteed and $142M fully.
What makes this deal impressive and record-tying is the $55 million a year places Lawrence at the top of the quarterback earners with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.
Burrow had been the only quarterback that reached $55 million per year, with the next closest figure belonging to Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, who makes $53 million per year.
Goff and the Lions recently signed an extension in May, catapulting him to the second highest-earning spot in the NFL. Now, with Lawrence making as much as Burrow, Goff drops down to third.
Lawrence was drafted No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL draft by the Jaguars with the hopes that he would become their long-awaited next franchise quarterback. Lawrence got off to a rocky start as he secured 3,641 yards, 12 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, 334 rushing yards, and two rushing touchdowns in his first season. Though he came under plenty of scrutiny, he still showcased elite talent.
The 2022 season was far better for Lawrence, as he passed for 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns, eight interceptions, 291 rushing yards, and five rushing touchdowns. The bounce-back season led to Lawrence receiving his first and only Pro Bowl nod.
In 2023, Lawrence once again secured over 4,000 passing yards, amassing 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 339 rushing yards, and four rushing touchdowns.
It appears the Jaguars organization can see the value of having Lawrence as part of their plan for the foreseeable future. The new five-year extension locks the young quarterback up through the 2028 season.
Lawrence is only 24 years old and is entering his fourth season in the NFL. Not many quarterbacks can say they threw for over 4,000 yards more than once, especially this early on in their career. He will need to clean up his interceptions moving forward, but this extension does make sense.
Does Lawrence deserve to be paid as much as Burrow? Well, that remains to be seen. But he has gotten better every season and the future is bright for him and this Jaguars team.
