Virginia Tech basketball: Megan Duffy hires top assistant away from North Carolina
- Megan Duffy, the new women’s basketball coach at Virginia Tech, has been quite busy this week. Duffy and Virginia Tech announced on Thursday that Sharnee Zoll-Norman has been hired as an assistant coach. Before working with Duffy, Zoll-Norman, a former standout point guard at the University of Virginia, was a Penn State coach.
Itoro Coleman, the associate head coach, joined Duffy’s team on Friday, and this was her second staff addition. Over the previous three seasons, Coleman played at North Carolina, where he helped the Tar Heels win three NCAA Tournaments. Prior to moving to Chapel Hill, Coleman worked as Duffy’s assistant at Marquette from 2020 to 21.
Coleman, 47, was a standout player at Clemson who guided the Tigers to two ACC titles. She was selected to the All-ACC team three times, was an honorable mention All-American, an All-Defensive All-American, and the 1999 ACC Tournament MVP.
She played for the United States at the 1999 Pan American Games and had a brief career in the WNBA. Coleman competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics for the Nigerian national team.

Itoro Coleman is coming to Virginia Tech, and I couldn’t be more happy about it, said Duffy. She will provide our program with an amazing amount of expertise from both on and off the court. Itoro is a teacher and recruiter of the highest caliber. She will provide our student-athletes with a strong leadership team. She will be a terrific asset in carrying on our winning heritage because of her extensive expertise and knowledge of the ACC.
Coleman is among the top 10 scorers, assists, and steals in school history and is inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame as a player.
Duffy made another excellent hire with this one. Coleman has strong connections throughout the ACC and the surrounding area in addition to being a renowned recruiter.
