Pittsburgh Steelers Have Added Another Quarterback to Roster
After signing Kyle Allen, the Pittsburgh Steelers now officially have three quarterbacks. Those three quarterbacks appear evident after dealing for Justin Fields and singing Allen and Russell Wilson. However, if you are familiar with the Steelers, you know that they enjoy having four quarterbacks in training camp. It appears like they have room for one more addition.
To start with, 28-year-old Allen will be starting his eighth NFL season. He most recently played in seven games for the Buffalo Bills in 2023 as Josh Allen’s primary backup, going the whole season without registering a throw.
He participated in just two games with the Houston Texans in 2022, which was his last game action. With a passing rating of 60.6, he completed 46 of 78 passes (59%) for 416 yards (5.3 yards per attempt), two touchdowns, and four interceptions.
However, Pittsburgh’s history of showing interest in quarterbacks suggests they’re not done yet. Yes, there was the peculiar visit by Michael Penix Jr. That is unexpected, but there’s more to this than that. In addition to visiting free agent quarterback Kory Curtis for a private workout, the Steelers sent their quarterbacks coach, Tom Arth, to South Alabama Pro Day to scout Carter Bradley.
Although the addition of those men won’t cause a stir, it does show that an attempt has been made to include someone else. Pittsburgh is trying to make room in this space.
Bradley was the group’s unknown, a man from the Senior Bowl. He plays with arm arrogance and has some surprise zip on his ball if you are not used to seeing him. However, it may result in some perplexing choices, as his front leg’s mechanics are a complete jumble, which causes balls to fly across the field.
In any case, he can throw the ball all over the yard for a late-round quarterback, and those are the qualities that teams seek for in targets that late in the draft. Curtis is a comparable kind with excellent physical tools, and there’s a strong link there because Gannon is a fairly close school for Pittsburgh. With the Steelers about to go on a private workout, he is still someone to keep a careful eye on.
The three players who will make the final roster are probably already familiar to you. And at this point, you might even be able to forecast the depth chart. However, a younger player who may be utilized as a practice squad stash is probably coming in with some promise. It’s no accident that Pittsburgh specifically targets younger players with arm potential.
They want an upside player, and even though they haven’t kept a quarterback on the practice squad in a while, the players’ profiles that they are considering this year might make a difference in their outlook, especially given there isn’t currently a quarterback under contract in 2025.
