DONE DEAL: Steelers Add to Defensive Line Depth with veteran …
Orlando, Florida — General manager Omar Khan stated at the NFL owner’s meetings on Monday that the Pittsburgh Steelers appear to have completed their defensive line rotation for the 2024 campaign by reaching a deal with veteran free agency Dean Lowry.
Entering his ninth season in the NFL, Lowry, 29, spent eight of those with the Green Bay Packers, who selected him in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Northwestern University.
In addition to Armon Watts, the Steelers will likely use 6-foot-6, 296-pound defensive lineman Lowry, who can play both three- and five-technique, as their seventh rotational defensive lineman, behind Cam Heyward, Larry Ogunjobi, Montravius Adams, Keeanu Benton, DeMarvin Leal, and Isaiahh Loudermilk.
Lowry, who was born in Rockford, Illinois, started for the Packers in his second season there in 2017 and remained a starter in Green Bay through 2022, if not more. In addition to 42 tackles and five tackles for loss, he had five sacks in 2021, which was his most significant season. In addition, he recovered a fumble and intercepted four passes.
March of last year saw Lowry sign a two-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Prior to his season ending on November 19 due to a pectoral injury, he participated in nine games for Minnesota. On March 12, he was set free.
On Monday, the Steelers strengthened their roster at three crucial positions by signing Lowry, slot receiver Quez Watkins, and third-string quarterback Kyle Allen.
