Jalen Hurts pays for the deceased football player’s funeral from North Shore High School.
The talented linebacker from North Shores, Jarvon Coles, was shot and died in Humble earlier this month. The outstanding player for the Philadelphia Eagles and native of Houston is said to have covered Coles’ burial costs.
North Shore High School senior Jarvon Coles’ life was cut short earlier this month after he was killed in a shooting in Humble. One NFL quarterback stepped up to help Coles’ family following the tragic incident.
Philadelphia Eagles star and Houston native Jalen Hurts reportedly covered the funeral expenses for Coles, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Coles’ grandfather, Braxton, confirmed the report Tuesday.
“[Jalen] is part of this community, and he felt it in his heart like so many others,” Braxton told ABC13 in Houston. “He wanted to relieve us of some of the stress of the tragedy.”

Jarvon’s funeral was held Saturday. Hundreds of Houstonians were in attendance, and March 16 was officially declared “Jarvon Coles Day” by Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee. Hurts was not able to attend the service, though he did offer words of condolences, noting “Jarvon was someone who was a rising star in our community.”
“From everything that I know, Jarvon was someone who was a rising star in our community,” Hurts said, per ABC13. “[He was] loved by many, and had a bright future ahead of him.”
Hurts’ words match the depiction of Jarvis from those in the Houston community. He reportedly earned a school GPA of over 4.0, adding academic excellence to his standout performance as a linebacker on the gridiron. He planned to attend Lamar University, leaving behind quite an impressive legacy at North Shore. “You cannot measure the impact he had on and off the field in our program,” North Shore assistant coach Kyle Herridge wrote on social media following Jarvon’s death. “Truly an incredible human being.”
Jarvon’s family is creating a foundation in his memory with a goal of supporting “local youth in athletic achievement,” per ABC 13. Law enforcement is still investigating Jarvon’s death. The 18-year-old was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head in the 4900 block of Field Lane in Humble late on Saturday, March 9. Authorities stated that Jones was among “a large group of persons, most in their teens and early 20s, who were “attending a party at a home rented via Airbnb.”

The party was advertised via social media and attended by 50-60 people, authorities reported. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated the culprits were likely “one or two shooters, about one block away,” who intentionally shot in the direction of the house party before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
“You cannot measure the impact he had on and off the field in our program,” North Shore assistant coach Kyle Herridge wrote on social media the day after the shooting. “Truly an incredible human being. Prayers needed for his family, our student athletes, our staff and the entire North Shore community. Rest easy Jarvon Coles.”
