Raiders reportedly hires Luke Getsy as offensive coordinator
Raiders reportedly hiring Luke Getsy as offensive coordinator
Luke Getsy, the coordinator, speaks with the media at PNC Center at Halas Hall during training camp.
After elevating interim head coach Antonio Pierce to head coach for the whole season two weeks ago, it seems the Raiders have once again found their offensive coordinator.
Negotiations broke down late last week, and according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafalo, Kliff Kingsbury, the former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, is now being considered for the position of offensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders.
Without any delay, the Raiders moved on from Kingsbury. Luke Getsy, a former offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, is supposedly going to be hired.
Getsy has been the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears for the last two seasons after serving as the offensive position coach for the Green Bay Packers for the most of his career. During Getsy’s tenure, Chicago’s offense was among the most imbalanced in the league. Chicago had the poorest passing average in the NFL in 2022—just 130 yards per game—but they had the greatest rushing assault in the league—177.3 yards per week.
The Bears’ running offense dropped to 141.1 yards per game in 2023, second in the league behind the Baltimore Ravens, but their passing offense increased to 182 yards per game in 2023, still in the lowest fourth of the league.
If nothing else, Justin Fields, the quarterback for the Bears, was never really put in a position to succeed by Getsy. The effectiveness of the Raiders offense will determine how much of that was Getsy’s fault and how much was Fields’.
