Steelers Pressed to Trade for Justin Fields to Fix QB Questions
Although they have a strong roster, the Pittsburgh Steelers have quarterback concerns. After a dismal sophomore season, it appears like Mike Tomlin and the club will give Kenny Pickett another year, but there are cries from national analysts for them to move on and find someone else.
Keyshawn Johnson feels that after a difficult career, the Steelers should try to acquire Bears quarterback Justin Fields through trade. However, he thinks Fields can improve the squad.
“This is a person the Pittsburgh Steelers and Mike Tomlin should go get if they need a quarterback fixed. Go grab Justin Fields, dude, if the Chicago Bears are foolish enough to cut him go,” Johnson said on Undispurted. “Go get Justin Fields and make him into the person you ought to have extracted from Kenny Pickett.” Forward him to Pittsburgh to join Mike Tomlin and his team. Let’s see what Pittsburgh looks like in 2024 when you back up the truck and go retrieve that young man.
In 2023, Fields made a little progress in his third season as Chicago’s starting quarterback. The 24-year-old former Ohio State player completed 227 of his 370 pass attempts for 2,562 yards and 16 touchdowns. In addition to throwing nine interceptions, he had an adjusted net yards per attempt of 5.29 and an 86.3 passer rating.
With an 85.2 quarterback rating, 4.63 adjusted net yards per attempt, 17 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and 2,242 yards last season, he completed 192 of 318 passes.
Fields’ rookie deal is about to expire, and the Bears need to make a decision this summer about whether to pick up his contract’s fifth-year option. That would be a 25 million dollar deal that is guaranteed. The Bears may also try to work out a standard contract extension.
Many have thus suggested that they might decide to replace Fields with either Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, starting over with a new quarterback and a five-year contract.
According to reports, the Bears have been taking enough inquiries regarding Fields for most general managers to know what they’re searching for. If the Bears decide not to take Fields before the draft, then Jeremy Fowler of ESPN predicts that they will most likely return with a second- or third-round choice.
