Celtics two-way guard suspended after recent G-League honor
JD Davison got some love for his hot start to the G League season for the Maine Celtics as the guard was named to the G League Up Next game during the NBA’s All-Star weekend. Davison was one of 28 players who earned the honor as it’s a nice honor for the second-year pro.
But it appears there was at least some trouble as Davison was suspended by the Maine Celtics for violating team policies. Davison missed the team’s 111-103 win over the Raptors 905 on Tuesday. It’s unclear how long the suspension will be and for what, but it’s still a blow for the 21-year-old guard
Davison has impressed this season, which is why he got the nod for the Up Next game. He’s averaging 21.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game in his second season as a pro. The Celtics picked Davison out of Alabama at 53rd overall in the 2022 draft. He played in 12 NBA games for the C’s last season; he’s suited up in two games as part of the 2023-24 campaign.
C’s coach Joe Mazzulla spoke about the honor for Davison going forward ahead of the Celtics’ win over the Pelicans on Monday.
“To me, as long as he knows that that’s not what gets him, as far as the Celtics go,” Mazzulla said. “Like I said, that’s an awesome thing. That should be something that you go for, but I just don’t want guys to think that they need to be defined by that, and so that’s a great individual award for him.
“And I’ve seen him grow as a player since when he first got here, especially just his approach to the game and his defense, and so that affirmation is great. But at the end of the day, it’s just the constantly small details, the defense, the reads, the execution, the professionalism — like those things are awarded over a longer period of time. So I hope he enjoys it and understands the process at the same time.”
