Mike Tomlin plans to return as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024.
Tomlin has informed the Steelers and his players of his plans to return for the 2024 season, according to a report from nfl.com’s Mike Garafolo on Tuesday. Tomlin, the longest-tenured coach in the NFL, will return for his 18th season.
Tomlin’s decision comes less than 24 hours after he walked out of a news conference when asked about his contract. Tomlin has one year remaining on his current contract, but the Steelers are interested in signing him to a contract extension.
Tomlin and the Steelers saw their season come to an end after a 31-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills in a Wild Card playoff game Monday night. The Steelers finished the regular season with a 10-7 record, marking the 17th consecutive non-losing season for Tomlin.
The Steelers have lost their past four playoff games and they haven’t won a playoff game since a 18-16 win over Kansas City in a divisional matchup during the 2016 season. They posted a 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals to capture Super Bowl 43, but haven’t reached the Super Bowl since the 2010 season.
Speculation about Tomlin’s status increased during the team’s three-game losing streak. However, the Steelers won their final three games and got help to secure a playoff berth.
