The Seattle Seahawks could get a big boost to their secondary Sunday when they take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in a game with major playoff implications for both teams.
Seattle starting cornerback Devon Witherspoon could see action on Sunday. The news wasn’t as good for safety Jamal Adams.
Witherspoon, the team’s starting left cornerback and nickel back, has missed the past two games with a hip pointer. The league’s Rookie of the Month for October tried to play last week against the Tennessee Titans, but they opted to hold him out. Witherspoon was limited in practice on throughout the week, according to the team’s injury report.
Witherspoon is officially listed as questionable for the game. Seattle coach Pete Carroll seemed optimistic that Witherspoon would play against the Steelers, but cautioned that he will be a game time decision.
“He practiced again today, and was moving pretty well out there,” Carroll told reporters Friday. “We’ll see how that goes. We’ll wait all the way up to game time.”
Adams, bothered by knee soreness, has also missed the past two games. He did not practice on Friday and the Seahawks placed him on injured reserve, likely ending his season.
“He did try to get out there and go. He’s not going to make it back this week,” Carroll told reporters. “He’s doing everything he can, it’s just really frustrating that he can’t quite get over the hump.”
Julian Love, who replaced Adams in the lineup, has performed very well alongside Quandre Diggs Love was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week following his two interceptions in the fourth quarter during Seattle’s 20-17 Week 15 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Adams, who must sit out at least four games, may have played his last game in a Seattle uniform unless the Seahawks made a deep playoff run.
Adams has been plagued by injuries, he hasn’t posted a sack since the 2020 season and with a base salary of $16.5 million and a cap hit of nearly $27 million in 2024, it’s not hard to imagine the Seahawks moving on next season.
