49ers Hold Practise for Former CFL Champion Quarterback: Source
Put an end to the 49ers rumours; Chris Streveler’s workout is probably related to future opponents.
This isn’t exactly the kind of 49ers rumour you’d expect to surface this early in the NFL season, but it did: journeyman quarterback Chris Streveler, who helped Winnipeg win the CFL championship in 2019 and has since played for the Cardinals and Jets, had a workout in San Francisco on Tuesday.
The information was obtained by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who stated on Twitter/X, “Source: Chris Streveler, a free agent quarterback, is practising with the 49ers today.”
Of course, the fact that a third-string quarterback is working out in the middle of November does not indicate that there is anything wrong with Sam Darnold and Brock Purdy, who together may be the best quarterback tandem in the NFL. In Week 10, Purdy had an incredible comeback performance against Jacksonville, rushing for 296 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception.
Because of his run/pass style of play and what coach Kyle Shanahan wants to see in practise, there is a case to be made for Streveler’s evaluation and potential addition to the practise squad. The 49ers will face two formidable running quarterbacks in the final weeks of the season: Lamar Jackson of the Ravens in Week 16 and Jalen Hurts of the Eagles in Week 13.
Not a single 49ers quarterback controversy rumour this year
That’s probably the reason if there’s a 49ers rumour concerning Chris Streveler being added. This is not 2022, when Purdy was the starting quarterback after the 49ers went through three quarterbacks in a row.
Throughout his two seasons in the Canadian Football League, Streveler was utilised in both the run and pass games. In his debut season, splitting time as part of a quarterback platoon, he completed 86 passes for 1,134 yards and 11 touchdowns but also ran 77 times for 441 yards and 10 scores.
Winipeg’s championship year was Streveler’s second season, when he once more platooned and threw for 1,554 yards, but he also had 14 interceptions. Running for 726 yards on 127 runs and 12 touchdowns, he was a productive back. In the Grey Cup title game, he caught a pass, ran for thirty yards, and had a touchdown pass to assist the Jets.
Since then, Strever has been up and down between the Jets, where he played two games and made his only career start, and the Cardinals, where he spent two years on the bench despite making seven appearances. Streveler had a game total of 10-15 throwing for 90 yards and 54 yards rushing on nine carries, but the Jets lost that Week 15 19-3 to the Jaguars with only three points scored.
Darnold Listed as One of the NFL’s Best Backups
There is absolutely no reason for the 49ers to replace Sam Darnold, nor is there any reason for dissatisfaction with him.
Prior to signing with San Francisco, Darnold, who was selected third overall in the 2018 NFL Draught, bounced about between the Jets and Panthers, two awful teams.
Over the course of five seasons, Darnold finished with a 21-34 record and a 78.2 quarterback rating. In the NFL, he has thrown 61 touchdowns and 55 interceptions. In the month prior to the start of the season, CBS Sports ranked the league’s best backup quarterbacks, and Darnold came in at number three.
The 49ers would be “fine” with Darnold, according to ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky, when Brock Purdy was battling a potential concussion.
He stated, “I believe they will get along just great with Sam Darnold.” “I’ve always thought that Sam Darnold would play deserving of that first draught pick if he were on a team like San Francisco.” This young man is physically the most gifted quarterback Kyle Shanahan has had in that offence since Matt Ryan. He has seen it all and has survived the storm.
