This season, Liverpool’s tactical lineup is “completely different” from previous ones.
This summer, the Reds underwent a fair personnel shake-up for the first time in several years. After so many years with the same core group, Anfield was undergoing significant changes.
The advantages of that have been evident thus far. Liverpool appeared revitalised and redesigned, but they are far from perfect. Andros Townsend, a winger for Luton Town, shares this opinion. Townsend, a 268-appearance Premier League veteran, has faced the Reds numerous times in his career.
The 32-year-old, who recently played for Luton Town against Liverpool, spoke with The Monday Night Club about his experiences last night.
“Very different,” Townsend conceded. Henderson and Fabinho, the two number sixes who served as the team’s workhorses, were there two years ago. They didn’t actually make as much progress. They knew they would have to wait for a counterattack, cut off any that occurred, and then pass the ball back to the attacking men.
“However, you have three midfielders who are all capable of getting on the ball, turning, and playing forward when it is at the feet of Gomez, Van Dijk, or Konate. Currently ranked number six, Mac Allister is a player of exceptional quality. What a struggle. Nobody can be allowed to possess the ball. You’re always looking around. Jota is looking to enter. Nunez follows after Salah, who is roaming. There is constant bombardment, no time for recuperation, and you must always remain alert.
Townsend evaluates Liverpool
This is a truly fascinating insight from a person who has faced off against Liverpool under manager Jurgen Klopp since 2015.
It’s not the same as really playing against the Reds, even though we can all see the changes in them this season. Being on the pitch is the only way to gain that perspective.
The fact that Townsend faced off against Liverpool in a game in which they didn’t do particularly well makes this even more intriguing.
Their humiliating defeat at the hands of Luton was only averted by a late equaliser, after Townsend played an hour at Kenilworth Road.
Imagine how difficult it is to play against Liverpool when they are truly at their best if the winger thought they were good back then.
Townsend singles out Nunez, Mac Allister, Jota, and Salah for commendation. However, you can always cause harm when people like Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, Luis Diaz, and Dominick Szoboszlai are around.
After the team’s tie with Luton ten days prior, there was a great deal of frustration. Nevertheless, Liverpool is looking fantastic in second place, one point behind leaders Manchester City, after defeating Brentford with an emphatic victory.
Although this is still a work in progress, Townsend’s remarks should serve as a constant reminder of its enormous potential.
