Joking about the penalty that erased the 49ers’ defensive touchdown
On Sunday, the 49ers avoided a self-inflicted catastrophe.
Ambry Thomas, a cornerback, produced a takeaway that resulted in a lengthy fumble return for a touchdown. Many 49ers, including head coach Kyle Shanahan, spilled onto the field during the return, which resulted in his touchdown being waived for an unsportsmanlike behaviour penalty.
The 49ers were forced to take over from their own 19, where the ball was placed following a 15-yard spot foul, rather than scoring a touchdown. at the subsequent drive, San Francisco scored, allowing Shanahan to make light of the penalty at his postgame press conference.
Shanahan expressed his disappointment, saying, “I was really disappointed with those first two turnovers, not scoring on either of them, and having to punt.” We actually scored on defence when we forced a third turnover, but we had to call it back. And that was a calculated move to free up our offence. Thus, we were able to complete one at last.
Naturally, the 49ers’ penalty wasn’t a calculated move, but as soon as they regained possession of the ball, their offence wasted no time in getting things going. They basically sealed the game with seven plays of 81 yards. Late in the fourth quarter, Deebo Samuel completed the drive with a 23-yard touchdown run, giving the 49ers a 27-3 lead.
However, Thomas’s turnover proved to be a crucial move in the match. Jacksonville was behind 20-3 and trying to score within the 10 yards of the 49ers. As the fourth quarter began, they were just a few seconds away from making it a 20–10 contest. Rather, Thomas recovered for the takeaway after stripping Christian Kirk, the wide receiver.
The 49ers’ penalty had the potential to be a huge swing play in the game, but they recovered, and the squad can now laugh about a potential catastrophe.
