How trading Chase Young to the 49ers might result in a superior draught pick
In just one game, Young shown the kind of effect he can have with the 49ers.
According to Chase Young’s box score, he ended his 49ers debut with one quarterback hit and one tackle, which was a half sack. However, Young’s presence was what made things easier for his colleagues.
Defence coordinator Steve Wilks might move the winner of the Defensive Player of the Year more if he had a capable edge rusher opposite Nick Bosa. One-on-ones with Arik Armstead and Javon Hargrave were guaranteed. Hargrave, Armstead, and Bosa all finished with sacks.
Young has been the missing piece, according to Fred Warner’s joke: “I think he fit in great.” That, I suppose, is the missing piece there. returning to dominate defence play. Having him out there is so comforting. He exudes such incredible enthusiasm.
Even while it might seem unrealistic to expect the 49ers to produce five or more sacks each game whenever Young is on the field, their pressure on Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is unavoidable.
Depending on how free agency plays out, San Francisco may end up with a better selection in addition to the draught pick they surrendered to Washington in order to acquire Young.
In his Monday column for Football Morning In America, Peter King emphasised the following scenario:
Assume that Young is a 49ers rental and that in March 2024 he signs a free agent contract for, say, $23 million annually. The Niners will probably receive a third-round compensatory pick in the 2025 draught in exchange, unless they re-sign their top players and sign one or more expensive free agents, which is doubtful given their present compensation structure. In the event that Young goes and the 49ers receive a third-round pick in exchange, that pick will probably be between picks 97 and 101. For fun, let’s refer to it as the 99th selection.
Thus, the outcome of this deal may be:
San Francisco gives Washington the 101st selection in 2024.
Young is acquired by San Francisco for the 99th selection in 2025, the final nine regular-season games in 2023, and maybe a few postseason games.
Imagine having Young for 11 or 12 games and then receiving a slightly better draught choice than what you were able to acquire in exchange for him.
The main thing to worry about with Young is his health. Young’s injuries apparently forced the Commanders to reduce their asking price. Given Chase’s past, teams probably found it hard to leave with anything more than a Day 3 pick.
However, Sunday demonstrated Young’s abilities and the potential influence he may have on an already elite defence. The 49ers will benefit from whatever happens this offseason if the former Ohio State product stays healthy.
