In their victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, the 49ers scored 34 points to end a three-game losing run. San Francisco had four different players score touchdowns, but Christian McCaffrey was not one of them.
The running back has hit the back of the end zone in 17 straight games, and in Week 10, he had the opportunity to hold the NFL record. But even though McCaffrey’s winning streak was broken, San Francisco emerged victorious.
McCaffrey made sure to locate the irony in the circumstance since he knew there would be inquiries regarding his lack of a point.
McCaffrey admitted to reporters, “I suck.” “Everyone on the team except for me scored.”
He was productive on the stat sheet even if he didn’t score. At the end of the game, McCaffrey gained 47 yards on six carries in addition to his 95 yards on 16 carries.
McCaffrey’s run ended, but not for want of effort. Coach Kyle Shanahan started to substitute some other players, but he decided to leave the running back in the game even though the team was ahead 31 points in the fourth quarter. He acknowledged that it was “nerve-racking,” but that’s because he didn’t want McCaffrey to be harmed.
“Seventeen games in a row is a huge record,” Shanahan remarked to the media. Thus, I was going to try to do it for him if we got the chance to. It gives me a little anxiety. I didn’t want to cause him any harm at all. Although I wish we could have done it for him, I consider it a significant accomplishment that he was able to do it for 17 games in a row.
When the Niners play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following week, McCaffrey will start over and attempt to begin a new run.
