Didier Drogba, the legendary striker for Chelsea, is no longer a threat for Liverpool, according to reports.
Didier Drogba, the legendary football player from Chelsea, is reportedly surpassed by a player at Liverpool, according to former player Adebayo Akinfenwa.
Many people consider Drogba to be one of the best strikers in Premier League history. In his two stints at Stamford Bridge, the Ivorian scored 104 goals in the league and claimed four championships.
However, when asked by Sky Sports to list the greatest strikers in Premier League history, Akinfenwa ranked Mohamed Salah of Liverpool ahead of Drogba.
The former Chelsea player dropped to ninth position, while Salah moved up to seventh. The Reds great Robbie Fowler finished eighth between them.
Akinfenwa’s list was headed by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, with Mo trailing after Harry Kane, Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Andy Cole, and Sergio Aguero in that order.
Salah climbs the all-time ranking.
Over Akinfenwa’s decision to rank Salah in his top ten, there was some debate in the Sky Sports studio.
Interestingly, though, there was only one point of contention: should Liverpool’s No. 11 be considered a “striker” or not?
If we were being picky, Mo probably wouldn’t qualify as a striker. He does score goals, to be sure, but it seems unfair to classify him as a striker.
However, we would contend that he ought to rank higher if he is on the list.
To be fair, the six players selected above him have more Premier League goals than he has. But in the division, Mo is the only player remaining active.
With 147 goals in total, the Egyptian is currently ranked 12th all-time and is sure to finish this season among the top 10.
Henry’s 175 is probably beyond him, at least for this year, but Salah has a good chance of surpassing Fowler’s 163, which puts him in ninth place. The 31-year-old may still play for Liverpool the next season, in which case his ceiling will likely rise even further.
Regarding Drogba, he was a superb striker who frequently performed admirably in front of a large crowd. However, he lags well behind in terms of his overall Premier League output. While 104 goals in 254 games is a respectable total, Salah has 43 more in 13 fewer games.
When Drogba returned to Chelsea in 2014 for his second tenure, the two did, in fact, play together. Given that Mo is an African legend in England, Didier must have taught him a lot. However, the question of who should hold the throne is settled.
