Liverpool defeated Toulouse 3-2 on matchday 4 of the Europa League group stage in France this Thursday. The game included a number of controversial moments, including a refereeing controversy and some gestures made by Uruguayan Darwin Nunez that went viral on social media and throughout Europe.
Donnum’s goal in the first half gave the French the lead after he took advantage of a mistake made by Greek player Kostas Tsimikas. Using another defensive blunder in the second half, Dallinga made it 2-0 for the home team. Subsequently, an own goal pulled Liverpool closer, but Magri’s 3-1 goal late in the game and Diogo Jota’s 3-2 final result ended the match.
When Jarrel Quansah scored Liverpool’s equaliser in the closing minutes of the match, it was disallowed because Argentine Alexis Mac Allister had allegedly committed a handball earlier in the game, which many replays later proved was not the case. This incident sparked controversy.
Nunez Darwin’s gesture
Darwin Nunez and Magri got into a heated argument before to the goal that was disallowed, and it appeared like the argument would end there. But in a moment captured on camera at the conclusion of the game, the Uruguayan chose not to give the Toulouse striker a salute.
