Carragher voiced his disapproval of the VAR mishap during the match against Toulouse by speaking up.
The legend was incensed by decisions made against Toulouse.
Thursday’s 3-2 loss to Toulouse in the Europa League seemed unavoidable despite Liverpool’s poor response. However, Luis Diaz, a Colombian striker, won the day. Hours before the game, Diaz’s father was let free from the National Liberation Army’s captivity in northern Colombia. After wearing a T-shirt that said “Freedom for Dad” and scoring in Sunday’s Premier League game, Diaz had requested the guerrillas to free his father from captivity. Although Diaz did not score on Thursday, he did test Toulouse keeper Guillaume Restes in the first half with a low effort from outside the area.
The home team, humiliated 5-1 at Anfield two weeks prior, saw their lead widened just before the hour mark by Thijs Dallinga after Aron Dønnum’s goal in the first half. After 74 minutes, Cristian Cásseres of Venezuela scored an own goal to make it 2-1, but Frank Magri swiftly regained the two-goal lead. After replacing Diaz in the 81st minute, Diogo Jota scored eight minutes later. In stoppage time, Liverpool believed they had tied the score, but VAR disallowed Jarell Quansah’s strike.
This marked Jürgen Klopp’s 450th Liverpool game in charge. Klopp had stated prior to the game that Diaz was “extremely delighted with the news of his father’s release.” He was not as pleased with his team’s performance after the game. “It was well deserved this defeat because they won practically all the decisive battles,” said Klopp. “We had too many situations where we should have won the ball but we didn’t.” Liverpool has nine points from four games, leading them in Group E. Toulouse trails by two points in second place.
