Potential Coaching Staff Reorganisation for the Green Bay Packers
The coaching staff of the Green Bay Packers may be changing as a result of the team’s poor performance this season.
The Green Bay Packers ended a four-game losing streak this past Sunday. They defeated the Los Angeles Rams, a different struggling team, 20-3. Although it was an important win, it doesn’t indicate that they have changed. Problems continued to rear their ugly heads, even in triumph. The Packers will undoubtedly undergo some kind of makeover during the off-season. The coaching staff of the Green Bay Packers is one area that might take the biggest blow from change.
This upcoming offseason, we think the coaching staff of the Green Bay Packers may see some changes. Regarding the individual in control of this franchise, however, don’t anticipate any changes. Though President Mark Murphy’s seat is becoming hotter, head coach Matt LaFleur is unlikely to break with the man he selected to succeed Mike McCarthy.
We are not arguing that LaFleur is not to fault for some of the Packers’ difficulties this year. He has committed a number of mistakes, particularly concerning the Green Bay Packers offence. Nevertheless, general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers front office did not do him any favours. LaFleur had to deal with a team that was both inexperienced and prone to flaws.
The likelihood of the Packers roster taking a different turn, especially one this young, is very low. There is no way that Gutekunst, Murphy, and Russ Ball are going to buck the youth revolution that has already begun. If anything is going to change, it will be with the coaching staff of the Green Bay Packers. Today, we examine the potential adjustments to the Packers’ offensive personnel.
Adam Stenavich, Offensive Coordinator
From 2019 to 2021, Adam Stenavich led the Packers’ offensive line with exceptional performance. The Packers fielded some of the top offensive lines in the NFL while Stenavich was their coach. However, the offensive line and the Packers’ offence as a whole have suffered since he was elevated to offensive coordinator.
Terminating Stenavich would create the impression that he was the problem. Given that LaFleur is the offensive playcaller, it is unlikely that he would take such an action. However, something has to shift. It seems that LaFleur needs an outside voice—that is, a voice that isn’t her friend. Putting Stenavich in a position where he flourishes would be the best thing the Packers coaching staff could do. Most folks don’t think about accepting a demotion. Perhaps, though, Stenavich would take a different title—assistant head coach/offensive line.
Luke Butkus, Offensive Line
Since taking over for Stenavich as the offensive line coach for the Packers, Luke Butkus’s tenure hasn’t been great. Yes, he has had to cope with wounds sustained by his group. However, younger players like Jon Runyan Jr. and Josh Myers haven’t advanced as much as most had anticipated.
Sadly, someone has to pay the price for the offensive line’s shortcomings. The best thing for the Packers coaching staff to do while Stenavich is still around would be to have him take Butkus’ place. Butkus is unlikely to accept a return to assistant offensive line coach status. That would be akin to a personnel department employee adopting a general manager role without having overall authority over football operations. Wait, what?
Tom Clements, Quarterbacks
Jordan Love, the starting quarterback for the Packers, has had some growing pains during his first campaign. Considering that this is his third season as a professional, some growing pains were to be expected.
Veteran quarterbacks coach Tom Clements has a strong track record. In his early years, he was one of the main factors that shaped Aaron Rodgers. Prior to being employed by LaFleur, Clements had no relationship with LaFleur. The offensive line of the Packers needs more coaches like him. LaFleur wants someone who will challenge her and perhaps even introduce her to novel ideas. It could be a good idea to give Clements more coaching responsibilities. He now holds the additional title of pass game coordinator as a result.
Ben Sirmans, Running Backs Coach
As avid Packers fans, you are aware of our admiration for running backs coach Ben Sirmans. With Aaron Jones as his starter running back, he has done an excellent job. Jones is now among the NFL’s most prolific running backs thanks to his collaboration with Sirmans. Although backup running back AJ Dillon has declined since his debut campaign, Sirmans is not to blame for it. It’s possible that Dillon has reached his limit.
Sirmans has been LaFleur’s devoted assistant and has performed admirably. In our opinion, he ought to not only rejoin the coaching staff in 2024, but also take over as the run game coordinator for the Packers. He is well-deserving of the promotion.
Jason Vrable, Wide Receivers/Pass Game Coordinator
We’re still not sure how Jason Vrable rose through the ranks of the Packers coaching staff to replace Luke Getsy, who left to join the Chicago Bears, as the pass game coordinator. His performance with the wide receivers hasn’t been particularly noteworthy. Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson, two second-year wide receivers, were anticipated to have a significant season. Sadly, it hasn’t taken place.
The Packers passing attack has not improved since the coordinator of the pass game was appointed. Yes, LaFleur is somewhat to blame for it, but Vrable has also played a significant role. Giving up on Vrable this off-season would make room for a fresh face, perhaps an experienced wide receivers coach. It would also enable Clements to assume responsibility for the pass game coordinator position.
John Dunn, Tight Ends
This is yet another intriguing addition made by LaFleur. John Dunn arrived with one of the least outstanding assistant coach résumé you will ever see, as we have reported. Dunn’s losses have followed him to every place. We were perplexed when he was elevated to the position of tight ends coach.
Dunn is currently the coach of a youthful team with a lot of potential. In the 2023 NFL Draught, the Packers selected Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft with top draught picks. Both have experienced problems this season. I’m not convinced LaFleur wants to entrust Dunn with Musgrave and Kraft’s future. Like Vrable, there should be a fresh perspective in the tight ends room for this coaching role.
