Jurgen Klopp was praised by Ian Wright for supporting Liverpool’s statement following their contentious 2-1 loss to Tottenham last month.
After Mikel Arteta and Arsenal made similar steps to Klopp and Liverpool this weekend following their defeat at Newcastle United, the analyst on Stick To Football lauded the Anfield manager.
Although VAR reviewed the goal for three different infractions, the Gunners lost 1-0. Many people think Anthony Gordon’s contentious tap-in should have been disallowed.
The incident has reignited the argument over video assistant referees in English football, with Arsenal issuing a statement akin to what Liverpool did following their loss to Tottenham.
After Liverpool made their statement, Wright defended the team, saying, “I’m glad that Jurgen Klopp did that because of the seriousness of the error and I still think Mikel is well within his rights.”
“I’m glad they support the manager [the statement]. Since errors are becoming more frequent to the point that action must be taken.
Wright is making sense in the arguments between Arsenal and Liverpool
The conversation around the Premier League has now gotten to the point where even teams endorsing the remarks of their manager are viewed as absurd, if not downright juvenile.
Because of this, it is encouraging to hear a cool-headed pundit like Wright address the issue. Liverpool and Arsenal have every right to criticise VAR errors and support their manager’s remarks.
Ultimately, we just want VAR to do its intended function—something the technology has horribly and severely failed to do this season.
