In 2022, Liverpool was never in talks to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-Min.
The Reds have seemingly been long-term supporters of the Spurs captain, with Jurgen Klopp in particular a strong fan.
And last week, reports surfaced that that admiration nearly materialised back in the summer of 2022.Liverpool was “sniffing around” Son since Spurs were not guaranteed a Champions League spot, according to The Telegraph, and the South Korean was intrigued.
Reputable transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has now made an effort to set the record straight. Romano claims that Son was “never” for sale at any time during his Tottenham tenure in a piece he wrote for the Daily Briefing today.
The journalist started, “I saw a story about Liverpool being keen on Son Heung-min when Sadio Mane left in 2022.”
However, from what I’ve heard, Son has never—ever—been considered for sale at Tottenham. He has always been regarded as indispensable and untouchable by Daniel Levy. Thus, there was never any negotiation and nothing at all happened with Liverpool or any other clubs.
Romano rubbishes Son claims
Even while Romano’s insights on transfer stories are always valuable, it appears that he has slightly missed the mark on this one.
It was never said that Son was close to Liverpool or that they were discussing him with Tottenham. Instead, the player was contemplating leaving and even jumping ship to Anfield.
communicating with the player and communicating with the club are two whole different things, as is always the case with Spurs. It doesn’t seem like Liverpool ever came close to persuading Daniel Levy to let go of one of his best players.
Maybe for that reason, the Reds never really went after Son. The 31-year-old is clearly highly valued by Klopp, and perhaps if he had been playing somewhere else, the manager would have made a greater effort.

However, Levy has a reputation for being a cunning negotiator. Perhaps Liverpool understood from the beginning that they were chasing the wrong rabbit.
Taking everything into account, that is unfortunate for Son and Liverpool.
Spurs aren’t going to win the Premier League, despite their strong start this year. It appears that they will not be winning any more trophies this season, having already exited the Carabao Cup and not being in Europe.
Son would have had a far higher chance of winning awards and Liverpool would have added another elite player if he had signed with the Reds. Alright, some things are simply meant to be.
