After speculation over Caoimhin Kelleher leaving Anfield this summer, the Liverpool goalkeeper revealed his aspirations to one day be the team’s first choice in goalkeeping.
Speaking to the media before of the Reds’ match against Toulouse in the UEFA Europa League tomorrow, the Republic of Ireland international was very clear about his long-term goals to establish himself as a starter.
For the past three seasons, the 24-year-old has served as Alisson Becker’s backup. This summer, Kelleher is being heavily linked to a move away from Liverpool.
After Kellher impressed for Liverpool in the League Cup and the Europa League, the decision was made to keep the Irish star at Anfield.
Furthermore, Kelleher has made it clear that he wants to move up to the starting position. The Cork-Bork keeper said, “Obviously, I’m still back up to Alisson right now.”
Obviously, playing as many games as possible is my goal. I’m a backup right now, but my goal has always been to be the best. I’m just trying to make the best of it at the moment.
To become a no. 1, Kelleher might need to leave Liverpool

Kelleher is undoubtedly a gifted goalie with a bright future in the game, but with Alisson at the top of his game, there is no way the Irish international will take the starting position for Liverpool.
Kelleher’s only realistic option going into 2024 is to leave Anfield, and a summer transfer is now imminent for the 24-year-old.
Kelleher is undoubtedly among the greatest backup goalkeepers in the Premier League, but considering his youth, the goalie needs to take a chance and leave Liverpool in order to establish himself as a top player somewhere else next season.
