Jurgen Klopp denounces tragic cries during the Liverpool vs. Luton match.
Jurgen Klopp has spoken out following tragic chants throughout the game.
During his team’s match against Luton, Jurgen Klopp suggested that supporters of Liverpool should feel guilty if they chanted at them in a way that alluded to the Hillsborough tragedy.
During the second half of the 1-1 Premier League match at Kenilworth Road, some home fans were singing the taunting.
“We’re better than that,” ex-Reds defender Jamie Carragher added in response to the chanting.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has already denounced “tragedy chanting” amongst opposing fans, and the Football Association released a new charter in July with guidelines for handling the issue.
It happened after an FA Cup final Manchester United supporter was arrested for donning a jersey that made fun of the Hillsborough deaths.
Following the Luton game, Klopp said he was unaware of the chanting that had started just after halftime while the score was still tied. However, he did add:
“It is a disgrace to all who said it.”
“At the start of the season I was involved in something with supporters coming together about tragedy chanting,” Carragher stated in a Sky Sports interview.
“In this game, I’ve heard that a few times. There’s no denying that rivalry is essential for supporters. But that’s not who we are.
“In the game, it has occurred two or three times. Every club has engaged in that behaviour at various points throughout the years.
“But I think we’re better than the world we live in right now.”
Five minutes into extra time, Tahith Chong’s 80th-minute goal for Luton was cancelled out by replacement Luis Diaz, giving Liverpool a thrilling point.
