If the Uruguayan striker keeps up his goal-scoring ways, Darwin Nunez might
As Darwin Nunez, a forward for Liverpool, quickly realises his full potential, Jurgen Klopp says he fears the heights the Uruguayan striker may reach if he keeps up his goal-scoring ways. He believes the rest of the Premier League should feel the same way. After a challenging first year on Merseyside, many analysts were eager to write Nunez off, but those critiques have already subsided.
Although he did not have a bad debut season, it is perhaps fair to conclude that he did not live up to the enormous turnover that followed his £85 million transfer from Benfica. Erling Haaland’s incredible goal scoring record at Manchester City did not assist him, as pundits had ranked the two as the Premier League’s best players before to the previous campaign.
Nunez was also dissatisfied with how long it took him to get used to living in a foreign place. His low command of the English language upon arrival slightly hindered him, and Klopp believed he needed to improve off the ball in order to earn a spot in the starting lineup. Nunez has now scored seven goals this season to start proving his sceptics wrong.
Nunez will rise to fame.
But he’s moved on from that now. Nunez is now letting his numbers do the talking instead of the din of criticism. Liverpool now has seven goals and five assists per game, up from 0.57 the previous season. Nunez is ahead of Haaland and Co., a formidable team, with only Callum Wilson having a greater xG (expected goals) without a penalty in the Premier League this season. In the opposing box, he is averaging 10 touches (up from 8.22 previous season) and logging a league-high 4.9 shots per game.
