Jamie Carragher claims that £35 million Liverpool player has significant difficulty defending
According to Jamie Carragher, Alexis Mac Allister lacks the defensive skills necessary to succeed as Liverpool’s starting holding midfielder.
The pundit criticised the Argentine international’s performance for the Reds this weekend against Luton Town, when Mac Allister struggled, while speaking on Sky Sports via the Independent.
Jurgen Klopp has given the midfield player, who cost £35 million when he signed with Brighton & Hove Albion this summer, the task of temporarily replacing Fabinho in the holding post.

But Mac Allister hasn’t performed well enough thus far this season, and many are beginning to wonder what the Argentine’s place in the Liverpool team should be.
“Liverpool’s midfield is better than it was last season, but they still lack a top holding midfield player,” stated Carragher.
It’s not the best holding midfielder, Mac Allister. Although he has outstanding receiving skills, he struggles defensively and doesn’t have the necessary quickness for the position.
Liverpool need to find a new use for Mac Allister

With 12 goals in all competitions for Brighton the previous season, it’s evident that Mac Allister is a successful midfield player when given the freedom to attack rather than defend.
Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool must also be considering taking a similar approach, given the Argentine’s severe struggles in controlling midfield.
Although Mac Allister is undoubtedly a fantastic match for Liverpool and will eventually prove his abilities, the South American is currently unable to perform in the defensive midfield position.
