brand-new orleans The New Orleans Saints defeated the Chicago Bears 24–17 on Sunday at the Caesars Superdome thanks to five turnovers.
With three interceptions and a fumble lost by rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent, along with a fumble lost by wide receiver DJ Moore, the Bears dropped their sixth straight game at the Superdome dating back to 1991.
Following the turnovers, the Saints scored ten points. The takeaways helped limit the Bears offence to a second-half field goal despite their inability to convert two second-half picks. There was no lesson learned by the Bears defence.
Bagent ran for 70 yards on eight carries and completed 18 of 30 throws for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Two of the Saints’ interceptions were from Paulson Adebo, and the other one was from Marcus Maye.
With two minutes and 26 seconds remaining, Saints kicker Blake Grupe missed a 47-yard field goal attempt off the left upright, giving the Bears a chance to equalise the score with the Saints up 24-17.
However, on the following drive, Demario Davis was stripped by Bagent, and Saints linebacker Pete Werner made a recovery.
At 14, the Bears and Saints were deadlocked at the half. Bagent’s passes to tight end Cole Kmet were the source of both Bears touchdowns.
With 11:05 remaining in the fourth quarter, Taysom Hill’s 3-yard touchdown pass to an open Juwan Johnson in the back of the end zone gave the Saints a commanding 24-point lead after they had traded field goals in the second half.
With 11:43 remaining in the third quarter, Grupe’s 55-yard field goal gave the Saints a 17-14 lead.
During the first drive of the second half, the Bears defence forced a three-and-out, and Moore caught an 11-yard throw from Bagent before fumbling. Adebo forced the fumble, which he recovered.
During the next three plays, the Saints gained just 2 yards and had to settle for a field goal.
The Bears’ following drive ended with a 31-yard field goal by Cairo Santos, tying the score at 17. Near the end of the first half, Santos missed a 40-yard shot off the right upright.
In the fourth quarter, Bagent threw his second interception to Maye, who made a diving catch to intercept a throw intended for Darnell Mooney at the Bears 38.
On the next drive, the Bears defence stopped Saints quarterback Derek Carr on a fourth-and-1 at the Bears 17; however, on the Bears’ subsequent possession, Adebo intercepted Bagent.
