The forward, 31, was eager to sign with Liverpool in 2022.
In 2022, Liverpool was getting close to making up for Jurgen Klopp’s “biggest mistake” in the transfer market.
Liverpool’s offence was on fire in the middle of last year, even if they narrowly missed out on the quadruple. However, a report published by The Telegraph yesterday stated that the Reds continued to wish to increase their choices.
It’s been reported that Liverpool was “sniffing around” Tottenham Hotspur striker Son Heung-Min because Sadio Mane was reportedly close to leaving.
It was reported that Son was “considering his options” as Spurs appeared destined to miss out on Champions League qualification.
Liverpool, where the South Korean reportedly expressed interest in relocating to Anfield, looks to have been one of those possibilities.
However, Tottenham ended up ending in fourth place and earning a Champions League spot due to Arsenal’s collapse at the end of the season. Son would have “likely” departed the club if they hadn’t been able to pull it off. What was possible.
Klopp admits Son regret
It is easy to speculate about Son’s potential had he played for Liverpool. The 31-year-old was fresh off a season in which he had won the Premier League Golden Boot.
It would have been a huge coup to convince him to leave Spurs and sign with the Reds. His coming would have been the ideal replacement for Mane’s departure.
However, Son wouldn’t have been your usual Liverpool signing. The former Bayern Leverkusen winger, who was then thirty years old and a true star, would essentially represent the exact reverse of the Reds’ typical recruiting approach.
However, it appears that Klopp had some career aspirations, and one of those was to sign Son.

Soon after this small story ended, in November 2022, Jurgen discussed the Tottenham forward with Korean news source KBS News. His remarks make clear why, had Son been available, the boss was prepared to disregard standard practise.
“Not signing Son Heung-Min was one of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made,” Klopp remarked. “He’s amazing, a global football icon, and among the best strikers in the game.”
After hearing that, it’s hard not to think Liverpool would have been interested in Son.
It is difficult to see where the South Korea international would have slotted in with the current Reds forward line. However, considering Jurgen’s admiration for him, he would have managed it. This could have been fantastic, but it will never happen now.
