It looks like Liverpool’s quest for a new left-sided centre defender may have just intensified.
According to reports, the Reds have been looking for a man to take over as captain of the team long-term from current player Virgil van Dijk.
The Athletic published a list of names Liverpool would be well-advised to consider for that position back in the summer. The defender for Lens, Facundo Medina, was one of the six suggestions made. With his left foot, versatility, and ability to carry the ball, Medina seems like the perfect addition to the Reds.
Furthermore, a report published today by Football Transfers indicates that a move for the 24-year-old is all but guaranteed for 2024.
Lens, who advanced from Ligue 2 to the Champions League thanks in large part to his contributions, are rumoured to have conceded that he is ‘likely’ to depart at some point in the upcoming season.
According to rumours, Medina has held “several meetings” in preparation for the January transfer window. The Premier League is allegedly interested, however no specific teams are stated. For the Argentine, Lens is reportedly looking to pay about £22 million.
Medina on the market
Medina would be a very intriguing possibility for Liverpool as they continue to explore their alternatives for a potential defensive acquisition.
He is not even close in stature to Van Dijk, at little over six feet tall.
But Liverpool might find the Argentina international to be a perfect fit if they’re searching for a ball-playing alternative.
It’s also important to note that Medina can play deeper lying midfield roles and has previously filled in at left back.

Trent Alexander-Arnold inverting from right-back, and Liverpool still figuring out how best to use the left-back. Prior to his recent injury, Andy Robertson was enjoying a successful season, but he didn’t seem entirely at ease in a new position.
In the meantime, Kostas Tsimikas appears set for a supporting role.
Thus, Medina could be a wise pick if Liverpool really want to alter the type of full-back they have. There isn’t much the Reds could do wrong for the quoted price.
Additionally, he would be a new South American acquaintance for Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Alexis Mac Allister, among others. Many advantages, we’ll have to wait and see where he ends up.
