Judge Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, was startled to learn that Newcastle had eliminated Manchester United from the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
In front of nearly 7,000 travelling fans, Eddie Howe’s team upset Old Trafford with goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock as the Magpies won 3-0. After the final whistle, United was jeered off as they lost for the second straight game without adding a goal.
Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez scored goals for Liverpool as they defeated Bournemouth to secure their spot in the quarterfinals. When Klopp learned that Newcastle had defeated Manchester United at the news conference following the game, his response was priceless.
Klopp sent out an expression of confusion, then seemed to mumble “ooooo okay” before gritting his teeth. United has had a challenging start to the season, having already dropped eight games in all competitions, five of which were in the Premier League.
Regarding his team’s performance, the Liverpool manager was happy with what he witnessed. “We should have scored more in the first half with the wind in our favor,” he stated.
“The boys battled really hard, and we scored a fantastic goal in the second half, but the weather was terrible.” We made it through despite the ridiculous one-yard on the pitch. We know they’ll come back at us, so we can’t hold out for long. Instead, we have to try playing from the back, which is risky but necessary.
We let up a set-piece goal, and I’m not sure why Justin Kluivert was left unguarded. It’s crucial that you succeed because games like these are extremely difficult for both teams. Andoni Iraola, the manager of Bournemouth, responded and gave his team credit for their effort. “I think we played really well; we cannot ask for much more from the players,” he remarked.
“We put a lot of pressure on them in the second half, but Darwin [Nunez] scored an incredible goal.” We persisted and had opportunities, but we lacked sufficient clinical expertise,” Iraola said. “One important component today was the wind. Both of us and they had trouble in the first and second halves. Both teams found it challenging, and I believe it made a big difference.
“We planned to exploit set-pieces and Liverpool didn’t want to kick it long in the second half, but they scored the second goal, so we have to applaud them. We had a good game today. You’re in a cup competition and you’d rather not leave.”
