Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo’s teammate at Liverpool, has been making waves lately.
Nunez is currently enjoying a strong scoring streak for Liverpool. The 24-year-old, who had scored in the previous two games, brilliantly struck the game-winning goal in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup contest against Bournemouth.
During the game, Gakpo was also on point, and LFCTV asked him about the player he shared the scoresheet with.
“He’s doing fantastic,” exclaimed the Dutchman. “What a fantastic goal. Far inside the corner. Yes, that’s great.
Gakpo commends Nunez form
Gakpo is correct to draw attention to his Uruguayan teammate’s recent performance. It’s reasonable to argue that Nunez has been on solid form since the beginning of the season.
Given his actions in the months afterward, it’s easy to forget that Liverpool’s No. 9 did not start the season in Klopp’s favour.
Others, including Gakpo, were preferred, therefore Darwin was forced to rely on brief appearances to get the manager’s attention.
But he managed to catch it. And even if he hasn’t been able to start every game due to minor injury niggles, the former Benfica striker ought to be among the first players on the roster.
To be fair to Gakpo, his form is also worthy of consideration.
This season, the Netherlands international seems to have lost a little steam. The 24-year-old doesn’t appear to be having quite the same influence as he had at the close of the previous campaign, despite his impressive performance.
Still, Gakpo has scored four goals in his previous four games thanks to his goal last night.
After failing to register a goal before the international break in September, he now has six in his past nine club and national team outings. In six starts, six goals.
Therefore, even though he might not be drawing as much attention as he once did, Gakpo might be growing more useful.
Whether it’s Nunez, Lewis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah, or him, you can wager that Liverpool’s front line will make the difference today. May it last for a long time.
