Liverpool, a Premier League team, has responded to the kidnapping of their winger Luis Diaz’s parents by stating that the player’s wellbeing is their “immediate priority.”
According to Naija News, while Luis Manuel Diaz and Cilenis Marulanda were at a petrol station in the Colombian La Guajira region, they were abducted by armed men on motorcycles.
The football player’s father is still in the kidnapper’s cave, according to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who verified the news via X on Saturday, October 28.
According to the president, Luis Diaz’s mother was saved in Barrancas, in the northern region of Columbia, and his father is still being sought after.
The 26-year-old Colombian winger was left out of Liverpool’s team for Sunday’s match against Nottingham Forest due to the incident.
Liverpool confirmed in a statement prior to kickoff that they are “aware” of a “ongoing situation” concerning the winger’s family.
The club continued, “We sincerely hope that the situation is resolved safely and as soon as possible.”
Additionally, coach Jurgen Klopp called the kidnapping event a “worrying situation for all of us” prior to the game.
“We obviously had to make a last-minute change because of the private situation involving Luis Diaz,” he continued.
“That was a very difficult evening. I’ve never experienced that before. I never needed this novel experience.
When Diogo Jota scored the game’s first goal in the 31st minute of the Premier League match—which was still in progress at the time of writing—he held up Luis Diaz’s shirt.
